MashUp Nashville Unveils Living Archive Altar Honoring Black Queer Ancestry and Intention Across the South

MashUp Nashville has expanded its spiritual and sacred spaces initiatives through a mobile community altar and a featured community video series exploring what Pride truly means in the words of Southern Black queer individuals.

What began as a sacred installation at People’s Pride and MashUp Weekend has now carried its sacred footprint to Nashville Pride. Over months of gatherings, community members have contributed handwritten notes, photographs of loved ones, sacred items, and physical offerings to the altar. As it travels from space to space across Middle Tennessee, the altar accumulates the collective energy, stories, and intentions of the Black queer community, becoming a living, mobile archive of queer memory.

Coinciding with the altar's journey, MashUp has released an interactive Instagram Reel asking community members directly: “What does PRIDE 🏳️‍🌈 mean to you… in your words…”

The featured piece highlights authentic voices from the community sharing their personal truths, ancestral connections, and hopes for Southern liberation.

The community altar operates as a physical extension of MashUp’s broader spiritual healing work under The Wholiness Project, an initiative dedicated to helping LGBTQ+ individuals heal religious trauma, reclaim spiritual autonomy, and create transformative rituals. By bringing sacred space and storytelling directly into public Pride celebrations, MashUp continues to elevate Black queer ritual and voice as vital tools for mental health, emotional wellness, and community connection.

Key Features of the Sacred Altar Installation:

• Ancestral Board: Featuring photos of community ancestors, past trailblazers, and personal loved ones pinned alongside handwritten notes of gratitude.

• Living Offerings: Including fresh flowers, citrus, candles, crystals, and traditional sacred herbs like sage and sweetgrass, continuously refreshed by community participation.

• Travel Notes & Intentions: Interactive spaces where attendees can write messages to their past, present, and future selves or ancestors, which are preserved as the altar moves to future events.
